Don’t know if I would bet on the garage rock horse right now…

This week’s (with a decent, puncher’s chance at month’s) sign that the garage rock thing isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. From punknews.org:

Fagersta, Sweden garage punks the Hives have announced a North American tour opening for adult contemporary soft rockers Maroon 5. Seriously.

Unless the major label folks are a hell of a lot smarter than I am, what kind of sense does this pairing make? Does this mean the Hives are done, or that they are about to pull a 180 and have a second (or third, depending on how you look at it) act? How does this auger for San Diego’s Louis XIV? They’ve got a new record due out in September at a time when majors are hemorrhaging non-superstar artists.

Note to the San Diego music scene: I think the current obsession with garage rock might be a little ill-advised. I don’t know what the next big thing will be, but my sense is that the market will bear the White Stripes in that particular niche and perhaps not much else. Then again, what the hell do I know?

Try as I might, it’s hard not to think “Finding Out True Love is Blind” is catchy.
