Sorry for the scants posts as of late: I’m completely nailed by getting things prepped for the academic job market. A note to readers: if any of you are chairs of political science departments, I’m ready to work.

Ah, the 30th birthday. A time for sober reflection on three decades of life, love, friendship and camaraderie. A vista from which to cast a meaningful gaze at a sober second life of children, career-mindedness and restful evenings spent by the hearth, leather-bound book and brandy snifter in hand.

Fuck all that noise. That’s for the day after. My 30th birthday will be spent enjoying your company and raucous tunes from three of my favorite, heaviest, chunkiest rock bands: Planes Mistaken for Stars, Kingdom of Magic, and Get Your Death On.

Flyer for the show is below. This will, incidentally, be Planes Mistaken for Stars’ LAST San Diego show, as the band is on their farewell tour.

Friday:
6 – Ryan Windham: I’m hoping it’s Barry Windham‘s son, but I’m probably wrong.
7 – Brainhammer: From the name, I’m expecting smooth jazz.
8 – Bailer: One of my favorite Denver bands, and one that’s jumped up a notch.
9 – Across Tundras: Sludge, grime, and red sunsets set to operatic doom.
10 – The Forecast/Autokinoton: Tough call. Something you’ve never seen vs. something you love?
11 – Kylesa: See Across Tundras–and rocket fuel.
12 – Red Sparrowes: See Across Tundras, add pretty pictures, Isis (it’s an Isis side project).

Saturday:
5 – Big Timber: Trevor from Bailer will be a busy man this weekend.
6 – El Minotaur: D&D Rock en Espanol?
7 – Low Oriole: Played with these guys not too long ago.
8 – New American Ramblers: Gonna get me some old time religion.
9 – Crestfallen: Heller’s band from back in the day. Denver emo-punk stalwarts.
10 – Planes Mistaken for Stars: FUCK YEAH. RIP.
11 – Christie Front Drive: Back from the dead for one night only.

Sunday:
6 – City of Ships: Just sounds pretty.
7 – Ghost Buffalo: Bros (and sister).
8 – Git Some: Apologies for playing favorites, but Denver’s best punk band right now.
9 – Red Cloud/Mustangs and Madras: Our erstwhile tourmates and brothers in arms.
10 – Golden City: From Brooklyn, with pieces of Christie Front Drive
11 – Think in French: So glad we’re getting to share this experience with them.
12 – TNA plays: One last time, with feeling.

Now I’m confused…

PMFS’s Myspace says they’ll be at the Casbah on September 21, but the listing at the Casbah website says locals Scarlet Symphony and Roses on her Grave. No offense, but I’m hoping the Casbah is one in error at this moment…

Denver Invades San Diego, parts 1 and 2

Tomorrow night: Kingdom of Magic @ The Zombie Lounge. Yours truly, and everyone else who knows a good time and likes stoner metal, will be there. It’s gonna be epic. I think they play second. A shitty band called Pen and Ink plays first. I can’t say enough good things about Kingdom of Magic, and their enigmatic frontman, Luscious Armand Fairchild. If you were fortunate enough to catch Git Some when they were here, you know what to expect.

September 21: Planes Mistaken for Stars farewell tour arrives at the Casbah. That’s the night before my birthday–I think I’ll get the party started a little early. No word as who is doing support yet. There will be more on this show, I can assure you.
